Designing the Invisible: Jennifer Hassett on the Rise of Fully Staffed Luxury Households in Phoenix

As more high-net-worth families relocate to Phoenix and Scottsdale, Jennifer Hassett is witnessing a shift from casual domestic help to fully structured household teams. What looks like effortless luxury is, in reality, a carefully orchestrated operation—one that requires leadership, systems, and foresight. From estate managers to specialized staff, today’s private residences function more like enterprises than homes. Jennifer emphasizes that the future of household management lies in intentional design, where clarity, discretion, and proactive planning create a seamless lifestyle that allows families to truly live without friction.

Jennifer, you’ve been observing a noticeable rise in fully staffed private households in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas. What factors are driving this influx of high-net-worth families relocating to the region?
We have absolutely seen a shift in the Phoenix and Scottsdale markets, particularly among high net worth and ultra high net worth families seeking not just a beautiful place to live, but a lifestyle that offers space, privacy, convenience, and a high level of comfort. The region has become especially attractive because it offers a rare combination of luxury real estate, favorable climate, outdoor living, and relative ease compared to some of the more saturated coastal markets.

Many of the families relocating here are coming from cities where they may have had access to luxury amenities, but not necessarily the same level of space, flexibility, or estate style living. In Scottsdale and Paradise Valley especially, they are able to acquire or build homes that function on a different scale. These properties often include extensive grounds, multiple structures, wellness amenities, guest accommodations, and spaces designed for entertaining, travel support, and multigenerational living.

What naturally follows is the need for a more intentional household infrastructure. Once a home reaches a certain size and complexity, it is no longer realistic for a family to manage every moving part informally. We are seeing more families recognize that a well run home requires the same thoughtfulness, discretion, and strategic planning that they would apply to any other important area of their lives. That is what is driving the rise in fully staffed households. It is not simply about luxury. It is about operations, privacy, and creating an environment that allows the family to live stress-free.

As more luxury households are established, many people are surprised to learn how complex running a large private residence can be. What are some of the behind the scenes responsibilities that go into managing a household at that level?
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that a luxury home is simply a larger version of a traditional household. In reality, many of these residences function more like private enterprises. They require systems, oversight, communication, and leadership to operate at a high level.

Behind the scenes, there is often constant coordination taking place. That may include managing household staff schedules, onboarding new team members, overseeing vendors and contractors, maintaining white-glove service standards, monitoring inventories, coordinating maintenance and repairs, preparing for guest arrivals, supporting travel transitions, and ensuring the property is always operating in a polished and ready state. In some homes, there may also be multiple residences, seasonal transitions, or complex family schedules that require careful orchestration.

There is also an invisible layer of management that is just as important, which is anticipating needs before they become problems. The best run households are proactive, not reactive. That means someone is thinking ahead about calendar demands, household flow, event preparation, staffing coverage, security considerations, property readiness, and the countless details that allow the family’s day to unfold smoothly.

When luxury household management is done well, it often goes unnoticed because everything simply works. But that seamlessness is rarely accidental. It is the result of experienced professionals, clear systems, and a household culture built around discretion, consistency, and excellence.

You often speak about the difference between casually hiring domestic help and building a structured household team. Why is it so important for families to take a more professional, organized approach when staffing their homes?
This distinction is incredibly important, especially at the luxury level. Casual hiring may work in limited situations, but in a complex household it often leads to role confusion, miscommunication, misaligned expectations, and ultimately turnover. A private home is an intimate environment, but when multiple staff members are involved it is also a workplace that requires structure.

A professionally built household team begins with clarity. Each role should be clearly defined, with an understanding of responsibilities, reporting relationships, boundaries, service expectations, and how each position supports the overall functioning of the home. Without that foundation, even highly capable individuals can struggle because they are being asked to operate without direction or cohesion.

Taking a more organized approach also protects the long term health of the household. It creates consistency, supports retention, and helps ensure that staff feel respected and set up for success. That matters greatly in private service, where trust, longevity, and discretion are everything. The strongest households are not necessarily the ones with the largest teams. They are the ones where each team member understands their role, leadership is clear, and the household is run with intentionality.

From my perspective, sophisticated staffing is not about filling positions. It is about designing an ecosystem that supports the family’s lifestyle with stability and grace. When families approach staffing in that way, the difference is profound.

There has also been a growing demand for estate managers and household managers. What role do these professionals play, and why are they becoming increasingly essential in luxury households?
Estate managers and household managers have become essential because they bring structure, accountability, and continuity to increasingly complex homes. They serve as the operational backbone of the residence, bridging the gap between the family’s vision for how they want to live and the daily execution required to make that happen.

Depending on the property and the family’s needs, these professionals may oversee staff, manage vendors, supervise property projects, coordinate maintenance schedules, monitor household standards, support events and entertaining, assist with travel logistics, and ensure that day to day operations are running efficiently.

What makes these roles so valuable is not just task management. It is leadership and oversight. An experienced estate manager or household manager creates order. They understand how to prioritize, communicate across teams, protect a principal’s time and privacy, and anticipate needs in a way that reduces friction throughout the household.

As homes become more sophisticated and families become more discerning about how they want their private lives managed, these roles are no longer viewed as optional luxuries. They are increasingly seen as foundational. A strong manager can elevate the performance of the entire household and create a standard of living that feels both effortless and exceptionally well supported.

With luxury real estate continuing to grow in places like Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, how do you see the future of professional household management evolving in the Phoenix area?
I believe the future of professional household management in Phoenix will become increasingly sophisticated, specialized, and strategic. As the luxury market continues to mature, we are seeing a growing awareness that exceptional homes require exceptional operations behind them. Families are no longer just seeking help. They are seeking expertise. I expect we will continue to see more clearly defined household roles, more intentional team structures, and a greater emphasis on professionals who understand private service at a very high level. Discretion, emotional intelligence, operational competence, and the ability to work seamlessly within a principal’s lifestyle will become even more valuable. Families are looking for individuals who do not simply complete tasks, but who understand standards, white-glove service, and how to contribute to a calm, highly functional home environment.

I also think we will see household staffing become more proactive and less reactive. Rather than hiring only when something feels unmanageable, more families will begin thinking strategically about household design from the outset, considering what type of support structure will best serve their lives, properties, and long term goals.

Phoenix is in a very interesting position because it is no longer viewed solely as a seasonal or secondary market. It has become a true destination for luxury living. As that continues, the households here will increasingly reflect the standards we have historically associated with more established private service markets. That creates a tremendous opportunity for the industry to evolve in a way that is more refined, more professional, and more aligned with the expectations of today’s high net worth families.
